Engineer. Visualist.
“Now there’s a genuine alternative and new pathway for emerging artists in the Maritimes to release new music, and beyond that – affordable ways to succeed in growing your audience.”
WORK IN THE LIVE MUSIC SCENE began some forty years ago, (and yes it really does seem like yesterday), as a live sound engineer, for both front of house and monitor mix. All types of artists and genres, from rock to traditional Irish.
And most engineers have something that they take a particular interest and specialize in. For me it was the drum sound – especially live, then a side quest of acoustic instruments such as acoustic guitar, fiddle, flute and banjo – instruments that can be challenging to get right in a live situation – perfected the sound I was looking for.
Fast forward a few years and I find myself designing and installing sound and lighting systems for clubs and venues to best practice for live work, whilst additionally advising on soundproofing and acoustics for performance spaces.
I founded and operated what became a very successful live venue in Dublin, Ireland.
Rock. Folk. Alternative. SingerSongwriter. Theatre. Comedy. Spoken Word. Two sound stages. At the time the only venue in Ireland to offer in-house 16 Track ADAT recording and video recording and editing. People came to listen and engage. Very much a musician-friendly venue. We punched above our weight.
A blank canvas then turned my attention to multimedia and tech. I’ve worked both tech and marketing (in a creative way) for both small brands and global brands, improving their digital presence and bottom line.
I am also a musician, I play guitar and bass, and write. I mention that because I intuitively understand the nuances and dynamics of live performance and sound, and just how difficult and disruptive it can be to capture in the studio what you do on stage every night.
And now a new chapter with Northern Voice – born to provide emerging artists in the Maritimes with a genuine alternative and a new practical pathway to releasing their music and growing their audiences.
Keep it live.
